Television in Italy

In Italy, the major television stations belong essentially to two major companies: Rai and Mediaset. RAI 1 is the main national tv-channel and is the most popular with the greatest number of viewers.  RAI 2 offers many imported American TV series, sports programmes, talent shows, reality shows and general entertainment. RAI 3 is more serious and provides documentaries, culture as well as the regional news.  

As well as the big three, RAI also provide TV channels with a less mass-market appeal. RAI 4 and RAI MOVIE broadcast high quality films. You can also find documentaries, culture and classical music on RAI 5, sometimes with opera streamed directly from ‘La Scala Opera House’ in Milan.

The Mediaset group comprises of several channels, both free and paid. RETE4 is a channel dedicated to popular tastes and an older demographic. This station shows soap operas, historical TV dramas, programmes about history and sometimes film seasons on specific topics such as westerns. Sometimes they offer live games from Europa League football as well.

CHANNEL 5 is a very varied channel that provides quizzes, game shows and films of all kinds as well as some live games from Champions League football. There is also ITALIA 1 aimed at children and young people with teen TV series, cartoons, entertaining programmes and movies.

Mediaset Premium offers PAY-TV movies and exclusive sports such as matches of the Serie A football. Other Pay TV  options include SKY, which offers films and sports like MotoGP and Formula 1 races. All Pay TV channels are available via online streaming for subscribers.

RAI News 24 and Sky TG 24 provides rolling news in live streaming format. For preschool children the most appropriate channels are RAI GULP and RAI YOYP. For the older ones there is CARTOON NETWORK.In Italy the issue of  sports broadcasting  is quite complex: SKY has the exclusive rights for the MotoGP and Formula 1 and fights for the broadcasting rights of Serie A football with Mediaset Premium.
